Lil Darlin is the bluegrass duo of Sophia Johnson and Devin Jake. Johnson is a British transplant to Austin and a legitimate triple threat singer-songwriter-lead guitarist. Classically trained, she spent a tenure with Trio Gatano, a UK jazz group whose debut “Who Ate All The Tapas?” was named #4 top album by The Sunday Times in 2005. Before moving to Texas, she was the principal songwriter for The Toy Hearts, which released five albums and garnered fans throughout the UK and Europe, including Ronnie Wood, among others. Devin Jake is an Austin-based singer-songwriter whose debut album, Jesus & Mama, received 2 nominations at the 2013 Independent Music Awards, including “Best Country Album,” while the song “Anywhere Bound” landed the “Americana Song of the Year” award. In 2016, Sophia Johnson released her first solo album, One Year, and Devin Jake’s sophomore record Days Into Years is slated for release in early 2017 on Atticus Records. A duo acoustic affair, Lil Darlin features Jake’s high lonesome lead vocals and rhythm guitar coupled with Johnson’s tight harmonies and her firebrand bluegrass flat-picking. They hold forth on five songs, including “Glory Land,” written by Jake, and “True Love,” co-written with Johnson. They also perform the Kitty Wells song, “Making Believe,” and two bluegrass chestnuts. The independently released Lil Darlin EP was engineered and recorded by Chris Burnes at Ameripolitan Studios.
